Why women are stupid – a review

The title is a bit misleading, one would think this is a tirade against women by a loony lesbian feminist, but its not (thankfully). Its actually a moving story of a woman growing up in a very difficult enviroment in South Africa, moving on to England to find herself. Big Day Out 2008 - Melbourne

Dust, queues, rules, and the muso's singing of anarchy, it seemed a strange mix. It had been more than 10 years since I had been to the big day out, and that last time was in Adelaide in the hieghts of grunge and the festival itself was in it first 5 years. Many things had changed. The Melbourne big day out had a new venue, after being at Princess park for the past few years it moved to Flemington racecourse, well more acurately the carpark at Flemington racecourse, those in power at the Victorian Racing Club obviously didn't want the punters (music) of Melbourne damaging their turf, or for that matter using their toilets. The organisers of the BDO had to provide everything themselves more...

The Shen By Nature (a review)

“ The Greatest hope is that these words are nothing “ is pronounced as the last line of the 37th parable, in this collection of some 111 parables, poems, thoughts, or insights putting a name to them is a little difficult but this does not detract from their influence. And in a way he does achieve his aim, but at the same time 'nothing' may well be the point of The Shen. The Shen (“Ring" of "eternity" and "infinity" was made from a doubled rope with its ends tied into a straight tangent line “ ) and this double looped ring is used as a metaphor in more than one of the parables. Often the the sense of an endless journey looping back on itself, or that the inner and outer are empty but more...

NEVER SAY DYE: They’ve Asked Us To Glastonbury

I love old rock stars. They remind me of my youth. I even met a few of them back then. I used to drink in the same pub as Rod Stewart in the late sixties but he never bought me a drink. Come to think of it, he never bought any one else one either. I was at a club with Billy Connolly and Gerry Rafferty once in the early seventies and they didn’t buy me a drink either. Even before that, I used to hang out with Ralph McTell and we both went for the same job in a bluegrass band. He got it, of course. I was standing next to Ray Davies at the Troubadour in Earls Court the other night, but he didn’t have a clue who I was and certainly didn’t buy me a drink. So, enough of this name dropping; more...

Jason A Cina

A native New Yorker from Roosevelt Island, Jason came into photography at a young age but it wasn't until his mid-twenties that he began to practice obsessively. His formal schooling was in stage design where the curricula required in-depth study in a range of visual subjects; subsequently influencing him to branch out and explore other media. Jason's approach to photography stems from a theatrical sensibility making his perception of the camera's view finder to be that of a proscenium arch. His training in lighting and painting is a dominant more...

Run to see the chickens...

I cringed when I saw trailers for, "Chicken Run," and thought of how it would attempt to spin humorous plot twists from the confinement and slaughter of chickens. When I think of chicken slaughterhouses, adorable claymation characters never spring to mind -- I think of blood and fear, shackles and feathers. Watching the trailers made me sure Chicken Run would trivialize the issue of animal abuse. I needn't have worried. Burger King may now be promoting the film to pitch hamburgers, but I bet that's only because the advertising deals were signed before the Burger King honchos could screen the film. At its core, Chicken Run is an unsurpassed animal rights film, and it is sure to have more...

It is also the capital of India, inhabited by over 10,000 rhesus monkeys, and about 14.3 million descendants of the ape. Collectively, they live their lives shruggingly at 48° C.
